Santa Cruz river basin
Do you know when humans arrived to the Santa Cruz river basin?
We know that humans arrived in the area about 11.200 years ago.
Remains of their activities were found were found at a site located southeast of Lago Roca, Chorrillo Malo 2, from which the Perito Moreno Glacier is visible.
Where did these first inhabitants come from and how did they live?
They came from the north. We know this because an artifact made of black obsidian, a type of volcanic glass that can only be obtained north of the Chico river, was discarded in Chorrillo Malo 2.
They were mobile hunter-gatherers, meaning they moved between different places throughout the year. They crossed the Santa Cruz river (very large nowadays), at a time when it had less water than it does today. These first occupations happened immediately after the retreat of the glaciers and would have occurred at a more humid time than today. Their subsistence was based on guanaco.
